Minicomics /

Zines

Justus has multiple minicomics / zines and more in progress. Justus is particularly interested in the field of graphic medicine, the intersection of comics and healthcare.

Nonfiction:

  • “Surgery Day” is the true account of the day Justus’s brother-in-law had surgery to remove a brain tumor and how the family supported one another through the long waiting process. READ IT HERE!

  • “Hopkins IKEA / IKEA Hopkins” is a short, experimental nonfiction piece about a day when Justus and his then-girlfriend went to Johns Hopkins, where she was part of a clinical trial for Huntington’s Disease, and then they went to IKEA. The comic presents the disorientation of both dealing with a deadly illness and the banalities of daily life. The comic is made to be read backwards and forwards and requires rotating the physical comic around while reading to have multiple different reading experiences.

  • “Sandbox Crabs,” like “Hopkins IKEA / IKEA Hopkins,” is part of a graphic memoir-in-process, about a year-long bad relationship, featuring a short sequence about the challenge of wanting to break up but not wanting to hurt someone in the process, especially when that someone suffers from serious illness.

Fiction:

  • “Cleaning House” is a self-contained short comic about a man reflecting on a recent breakup, the good and bad of the relationship and its lasting effects.

  • “A Small, Good Thing After the Collapse” is a story of a man and a monster scavenging for survival after the fall of civilization and finding something pleasant amid the decay of society.
